The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
